Christchurch

Eigentlich wäre ich gerne noch einen Tag in Dunedin geblieben und wenn ich gewußt hätte, was mich in Christchurch erwartet, hätte ich wahrscheinlich auch noch verlängert. Doch dazu komme ich später.

Doch so bin ich recht früh losgefahren, da ich die letzte lange Tour vor mir hatte und nicht sicher war, wie das Wetter werden würde. Es war zwar Regen vorausgesagt, aber bis jetzt hat den ganzen Tag die Sonne geschienen!!

Zwischen Dunedin und Christchurch hatte ich nur einen Sightseeing Stopp am Moeraki Beach eingeplant. Dort liegen absolut runde Steine am Strand, als ob ein Riese sein Murmelspiel vergessen hätte. Sie liegen da wahrscheinlich schon seit Jahrhunderten. Doch so langsam gehen die ersten kaputt und andere bekommen Risse. Das liegt wahrscheinlich daran, daß die Leute auf ihnen herumturnen müssen!!! Die Menschen schaffen es in wenigen Jahren zu zerstören, wozu die Natur Jahrhunderte oder Jahrtausende gebraucht hat, um es zu erschaffen.

Vor da an war es nur noch eine Frage der Geduld, bis Christchurch zu kommen.

Ich war ca. um 15:30 Uhr an der Jugendherberge und um 16 Uhr bin ich zu meinem ersten und wahrscheinlich auch letzten Stadtspaziergang aufgebrochen. Schon vor dem Erdbeben gab es hier nicht viel anzuschauen, aber jetzt gibt es nur noch freie Flächen, wo die Gebäude schon abgerissen sind, Gebäude, die noch abgerissen werden müssen und Gebäude, bei denen man hofft sie retten zu können. Zur letzteren Kategorie gehört z.B. die Kathedrale von Christchurch.

Um wenigstens halbwegs wieder eine Innenstadt zu haben, wurde eine Containersiedlung aufgebaut, in dem Geschäfte, Restaurant u.a. untergebracht sind. Bei der Sache hilft die Einstellung der „Kiwis“ zum Leben ungemein.

Der Vorteil an dem Ganzen ist, daß man die Stadt von der Basis her geplant wieder neu aufbauen kann. Ich bin mal gespannt, was daraus wird.

Der Nachteil ist, ich weiß nicht, was ich morgen machen soll. Es bleibt nur noch der Botanische Garten übrig. Den hatte ich mir eigentlich für den letzten Tag aufgehen wollen, da ich zwischen Frühstück – Check out und Abflug nach Sydney einige Zeit habe, die überbrückt werden will.

Mal sehen!! In Dunedin hätte ich gewußt, wie ich den Tag verbringe.

I would have loved to stay another day in Dunedin and if I would have known what Christchurch meant for me, I probably would have stayed another night. More on that later!!

Since I did not know I started of early as I had a long drive ahead of me and did not know what the weather would be like. The forecast said that I should have rained today but the sun was out all day!!

Between Dunedin and Christchurch I only had one sightseeing stop at Moeraki Beach planned. There you have absolute round boulders on the beach as if a giant forgot his marbles. They are probably already there for thousands of years. However now they are slowly breaking up. The reason are probably the people you have to hop on them for a picture!! Mankind is always able to destroy something in years that nature took hundreds or thousands of years to create.

From there it was mostly a question of patience to get to Christchurch.

I arrived about 3:30 pm at the YHA and started my first and probably last tour through the city. Before the earthquake there was not much to see in Christchurch. But now you only have open patches, where buildings have already been demolished, buildings that are waiting to be torn down and buildings like the old cathedral that are waiting for restauration.

To have even something of an inner city a container city was created with shops, restaurants and whatever you need in a city. In a situation like this I believe the “Kiwi Way” of doing things helps a lot.

The big disadvantage is that I don’t know what to do tomorrow. I only have the Botanical Garden left and I wanted to keep it for Tuesday before I leave as I have a lot of time between breakfast – check out and departure to Sydney and now I don’t know what to do.

Let’s see!! Unfortunately I would have known exactly what to do in Dunedin!!

Ich bin heute noch einmal durch die Stadt gelaufen und habe mir ein paar andere Ecken angeschaut. Doch das Ergebnis ist das Gleiche. Selbst Gebäude, die so aussehen, als ob sie noch zu gebrauchen sind, entpuppen sich bei näherem Hinsehen als abbruchreif.

Doch auch heute habe ich wieder Beispiele dafür gefunden, wie die Leute hier versuchen, das Beste auf dem Ganzen zu machen. Einmal habe ich ein riesiges Wandbild einer Ballerina gefunden, wo später das Gebäude für „Performing Arts“ entstehen soll. Und zum anderen „ein Wohnzimmer“ in dem der Sessel aus zig kleinen Scherben von zerbrochenem Porzellan besteht, welches so einen neuen Zweck!!!

Interessant war auch ein kurzes Gespräch mit einem britischen Ehepaar, welches verzweifelt auf der Suche nach einen Café oder Restaurant war und nichts richtig finden konnte. Sie konnten nicht verstehen, warum nach 4 Jahren immer noch nicht alle Schäden beseitigt sind. Das Problem ist einfach, daß es zu viel ist, was neu gemacht werden muß. Außerdem gibt es bei 4 Mio Einwohner nur eine bestimmte Anzahl von Handwerkern. Die Leute in den anderen Teilen Neuseelands beschweren sich schon, da es überall Monate dauert, bis die einfachsten Handwerksaufträge ausgeführt sind, da kaum noch Handwerker vor Ort sind.

Das Beben hat nur 40 sek gedauert und immense Schäden angerichtet. Nicht nur an den Gebäuden, sondern auch an den Wasser-, Strom- und Gasleitungen. Daher sind auch viele Straßen nicht so befahrbar, wie es sein soll. Überall wird gebaut. Es wäre schon mal interessant in 10 Jahren wiederzukommen und zu schauen, was aus der Stadt geworden ist.

Morgen geht es nach Sydney. Einen Teil der Sachen habe ich heute schon gepackt, so daß ich morgen nur noch den Rest machen muß. Ich werde mich recht früh auf den Weg zum Flughafen machen, da ich nicht weiß, wie gut oder schlecht ich zum Flughafen komme. Es kann daher sein, daß der Bericht von morgen erst einen Tag später erscheint.

I took another stroll through the city and had a look at some other areas. But the result is the same. Buildings that at first glance look like you can still use them, are just waiting to be demolished.

However I found more examples how positive the people here are dealing with the whole situation. The first is a huge mural of a ballet dancer at the spot where the future center of performing arts will be. And the second is a kind of “living room” with an armchair make of hundreds of pieces from china that was broken during the earthquake thereby giving it a new purpose!!

Also I had a very interesting short chat with a couple from England who was desperate to find a café or restaurant and could not understand why all the damage was not eliminated after 4 years. The problem simply is that it is just too much that needs to be rebuild. Also there are only so many craftsmen within a 4 Mio population. I know that the people in other parts of the country are complaining as there are hardly any craftsmen left anywhere else. So it takes ages to get something fixed.

The earthquake only lasted 40 sec but the damage is enormous. Not only are the buildings damaged but water and gas pipelines as well as electrical wires. Therefore some of the streets are closed as well. There are construction sites everywhere. It would be really interesting to be here again in 10 years to see what has become of the city.

Tomorrow I am off to Sydney. I already packed a good part of my stuff today so there is only a bit left for tomorrow. As I am not sure how long it will take me to get to the airport, I will leave here pretty early. Therefore it can be that tomorrow’s account will be one day late.

Heute Morgen war ich recht früh wach, was auch ganz gut war. Denn ich wollte mir unbedingt noch den botanischen Garten anschauen, was ich auch geschafft habe, bevor die Invasion kam. So wie es aussah, muß irgendwo ein Kreuzfahrtschiff angelegt haben, denn auf einmal waren Busladungen von Menschen im Garten. Aber da war ich mit einer Besichtigung schon durch.

Ich habe mich dann gegen 12 Uhr auf den Weg zum Flughafen gemacht. Vor dem Hintergrund, daß mein Flieger erst um 15:50 Uhr ging, eigentlich viel zu früh, aber ich wußte nicht, wo ich eine Tankstelle finden konnte, an der man auch das Auto waschen konnte. Außerdem war ich mir nicht sicher, ob alle Straßen so ohne weiteres befahrbar waren.

Doch die Überraschung war groß. Nur ein paar Querstraßen Richtung Norden sah es so aus, als ob es nie ein Erdbeben geben hat. Anscheinend sind nur bestimmte Teile Christchurchs vom Erdbeben getroffen worden, während andere komplett unbehelligt geblieben sind.

Dadurch war ich natürlich wirklich sehr früh am Flughafen und sehr viel konnte man dort auch nicht machen. Zum Glück hatte ich noch ein eBook zum Lesen.

Zum Flug ist zu sagen, daß das Check in nur an Automaten stattgefunden hat und daß man seine Koffer selber vorher wiegen und auf ein Band heben mußte. Da ist selbst der eingeschränkte Service der Lufthansa noch Luxus dagegen.

Gestartet sind wir pünktlich. Das Flugzeug war ein A320, der so bestuhlt war, daß man zwar einiges an Beinfreiheit hatte, aber nur schlecht aus dem Sitz kam. Jedenfalls nicht, ohne an der Lehne des Vordermannes zu ziehen.

Essen bekamen nur die Passagiere, die es bezahlt hatten. Das hat die Besatzung anhand einer Liste überprüft. Der Rest konnte sich entweder Snacks und Getränke über die Bordunterhaltung bestellen oder sich mit Kaffee, Tee und Wasser zufrieden geben.

Dadurch, daß genau geschaut werden mußte, wer was an Service gebucht hat, dauerte der Service recht lange. In den 3 Stunden Flugzeit hat die Crew ist gerade geschafft, das Essen auszuteilen, einmal Getränke zu servieren und den Müll wieder einzusammeln.

Oh, eine Sache – natürlich habe ich eines der speziellen Sicherheitsvideos mit Charakteren aus dem „Hobbit“ und „Herrn der Ringe“ zu sehen bekommen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOw44VFNk8Y 

In Sydney angekommen, war es gar nicht mal so einfach herauszufinden, wo die Shuttlebusse in die Innenstadt abfahren. Da mußte ich ganz schon laufen bis ich die Bussteige gefunden hatte und dann hat es gedauert, bis ein Bus kam. Mit 20 AUS$ (ca. 15 EUR) ist der Spaß auch nicht gerade günstig, aber dafür wurde ich direkt vor der JHB abgesetzt.

Die JHB liegt in der Altstadt von Sydney – auch genannt „The Rocks“. Mein Zimmer und die Terrasse oben blicken auf das Opernhaus und die Sydney Harbour Bridge. Den Blick konnte ich beim Abendessen genießen, da es heute oben selbstgemachte Hamburger gab. Das paßte mir ganz gut, da ich nicht richtig zum Mittagessen gekommen war.

Alt werde ich heute Abend hier nicht mehr. Vor allem weil es in Sydney 2 Stunden früher ist – 21 Uhr abends anstatt 23 Uhr. Dann komme ich morgen wenigstens rechtzeitig aus dem Bett und habe genug Zeit, mit die Stadt anzuschauen.

Today I was up pretty early – luckily!! That way I was able to have a look at the botanical gardens before the masses invaded it. As it seems there must have been a cruise ship somewhere as suddenly busloads of people arrived. But I was done by then.

At noon I made my way to the airport. I knew it would be a bit early, as my flight only left at 3:50 pm, but I did not know where to find a gas station that also had a car wash on premises. In addition I was afraid that you could not use all streets as marked on the maps.

But I was really surprised. Just a couple of blocks further north it looked as if the earthquake never happened. As it seems it only hit parts of the city while others were not affected at all!!

That way I was really way too early at the airport and there was not a lot you could do. Thank god I still had an ebook to read.

The feedback for the flight is that first of all the check in was only possible at a kiosk. Next you had to weight your luggage to make sure you did not exceed the weight limit and put it on the luggage belt yourself. Compared to that the reduced Lufthansa service is luxury!!

We departed on time. The aircraft was an A320 and was configured that way that you had enough leg room, but if you wanted to get up, you had problems to get out of your seat without disturbing the one in front of you.  

Only the passengers who paid extra got some food. The crew had a checklist for that. The rest could either order snacks and drinks via the entertainment program or have a cup of coffee, tea or water.

Since the crew had to be careful distributing the food the service took quite a long time. The 3 hours flight time was just enough to hand out the food and beverages once and collect the waste.

Once I arrived in Sydney I had some problems to find the shuttle busses that were going into the city. There were at the other end of the terminal. I had to walk quite a long way to get there. The bus, once it arrives, cost 20 AUS$ (ca. 15EUR) and is not that cheap, but it drops you off directly in front of the YHA.

The YHA is located directly in the old part of Sydney they call “The Rocks”. My room and the terrace are overlooking the opera house and the Sydney Harbor Bridge. I could enjoy the view while having a hamburger that was prepared on the terrace tonight. That was great as I did not have to go out for dinner anymore.

I will not stay up very long today. One reason is that Sydney is in a different time zone. Instead of 11 pm it is 9 pm now. This will help me to get up early tomorrow to have a enough time for a sightseeing tour.
