Te Anau

Nach dem heute Nacht sämtliche Trampeltierherden der Welt an meinem Zimmer vorbeimarschiert sind, bin ich heute Morgen bei 16°C und Regen aus Queenstown Richtung Te Anau „geflohen“.

Das Wetter wurde immer besser, je weiter ich mich von Queenstown entfernt habe. Die Strecke war landschaftlich sehr schön und die interessante Wolkenbildung hat sein Übriges dazu getan. Es sah fantastisch aus. Ich hätte immer wieder zum Fotographieren anhalten können. Was leider nicht immer ging.

Mit einem Einkaufs und Tankstopp war ich um 12:30 Uhr in Te Anau und konnte auch schon um 13 Uhr in mein Zimmer. Dieses Mal habe ich ein Stockbett im Zimmer, aber solange es bequem ist, soll es mir recht sein, da das Zimmer ansonsten sehr großzügig geschnitten ist.

Um 14 Uhr hatte ich eine Tour zu der Glühwürmchenhöhle hier in Te Anau gebucht (es gibt auch noch eine in Waimoto auf der Nordinsel). Für die etwas mehr als 2 Stunden dauernde Tour zahlt man 75 NZ$ (ca. 50 EUR), ab sie ist es wert.

Erst geht es mit dem Schiff über den Te Anau See. Dort bekommt man einen ersten Eindruck vom Fjordland. Dann wurde die große Gruppe und Teilgruppen von 12 – 14 Leuten aufgeteilt, bevor es in die Höhle geht.

Hier bei der muß man in der Lage sein ca. 10 – 15 m gebückt zu gehen, da am Eingang zu Höhle die Decke sehr niedrig ist. Es ging vorbei an unterirdischen Wasserfällen bis hin zu einem See, der in fast totaler Dunkelheit mit einem Boot befahren wurde. Das einzige Licht kam von den hunderten Glühwürmchen. Die machten so viel Licht, daß man die Umrisse der anderen Teilnehmer ohne weitere Lichtquelle erkennen konnte. Das war schon beeindruckend. Fotos konnte man natürlich (leider) nicht machen.

Auf dem Rückweg über dem See konnte man richtig sehen, warum Neuseeland auch das Land der großen weißen Wolke genannt wird. 

Zurück habe ich eine Runde durch Te Anau gedreht. Hier steppt zwar nicht der Bär, aber das brauche ich auch nicht. Es gibt nette Cafés und Restaurants sowie einen richtigen Supermarkt in der Nähe. In Queenstown gab es nur einen kleinen Four Square in der Stadt und die großen Supermärkte waren alle außerhalb der Stadt und nur mit dem Auto zu erreichen.

Morgen geht es erst einmal auf Schiffstour durch den Milford Sound. Für Montag ist noch nichts geplant – zum ersten Mal auf der Tour!!

After all bactrican camels of the world passed by my room last night, I “fled” Queenstown towards Te Anau this morning. The weather was 16°C and raining.

The weather got better and better the further I got away from Queenstown. The landscape along the route was just gorgeous and the clouding help to emphasis the beauty of it. I could have stop to take pictures very often, but unfortunately it was not always possible.

Including a stop for grocery shopping and refueling I was In Te Anau at 12:30 pm and was able to check in at 1 pm. This time I have a bunk bed. But that is ok as long as it is comfortable as the room is quite spacious.

At 2 pm I had booked a tour to the glow worm caves of Te Anau (there is also one in Waimoto on the north island). The 2 hrs tour costs 75NZ$ (ca. 50 EUR). But it is good value for money.

First we took the ship across the Lake Te Anau. There you get the first idea about the Fjordland. At our destination the big group was divided in groups of 12 -14 people each before we went into the cave.

Here you have to be able to walk bent over for 10 – 15 m as the ceiling of the entrance of the cave is very low. You walk passed underground waterfalls to a lake. There you take a boat in complete darkness. The only light came from the glow worms. They emitted that much light that you could see the outlines of the other people in your group. It was really amazing!! Of course you could not take any pictures (unfortunately).

On the way back to Te Anau across the lake you could really see why New Zealand is also called the land of the big white cloud.

Back in Te Anau I walked a bit trough the village. You may not have a party zone here but otherwise you have everything you need to live. There are nice cafés and Restaurants and also a real supermarket close by. In Queenstown you only had a small Four Square in the town center. The big supermarkets were in the suburbs and you could only reach them by car.

Tomorrow I have booked a boat tour through the Milford Sound. Nothing is planned for Monday – for the first time on the tour!!

Da das Wetter hier in Te Anau heute Morgen ok, d.h. trocken war, bin ich Richtung Milford Sound losgefahren. Doch je näher ich nach Milford kam, desto schlechter wurde das Wetter, bis es kurz davor nur noch am Regnen war. Doch dann war es zu spät auf die Nachmittagstour zu wechseln.

Also bin ich zusammen mit ca. 40 anderen bei strömenden Regen auf das Boot gegangen – und habe es nicht bereut!! Die imposante Landschaft wurde auch im Regen deutlich. Auch wenn Sonnenschein schöner gewesen wäre, so haben wir doch viele Wasserfälle gesehen, die zum größten Teil nur bei Regen erscheinen und schon 30 min nach dem der Regen aufgehört hat, versiegen.

Auch Pelzrobben haben wir wieder gesehen. Dieses Mal waren es mal nicht braune Robben auf braunem Grund!!! Übrigens sind Pelzrobben sehr stark mit Seelöwen verwandt. Meine erste Einschätzung damals in Kaikoura war also nicht ganz falsch.

Ich hatte für 88 NZ$ (ca. 58 EUR ohne Transport) eine 2,5 Stunden Nature Tour gebucht. Der Unterscheid zu der 1,5 Stunden Scenic Tour ist, daß wir einen Führer mit an Bord hatten, der uns alles erklärt hat. Ich kann die Tour nur jedem empfehlen.

Bei dem Wetter bin ich übrigens froh, daß es nicht mit der Unterkunft direkt am Milford Sound geklappt hat. Denn da kann man gar nichts machen, wenn das Wetter nicht gut ist.

Seit ich wieder in Te Anau bin, kämpfe ich mit Vodafone. Meine Flatrate läuft heute aus und ich würde gerne die Flatrate auf eine günstigere wechseln, da ich nur noch 10 Tage da bin. Ich hatte gestern schon 2 vergebliche Versuche über die Hotline gestartet und bin auch jetzt bei meinem 2. Versuch nach dem der Versuch im Internet gescheitert ist. Ich bin mal gespannt, wie viele Stunden ich jetzt warten muß und es überhaupt klappt. Wenn Ihr mich in den nächsten Tagen nicht mehr per Handy erreicht, wißt Ihr warum!!!

Ich habe mich entschieden, daß ich noch einen weiteren Tag hier in Te Anau bleibe. Es gibt ein paar Sachen, die ich dringend mal machen muß und ein wenig Ausruhen steht auch an!!

Ach ja, gestern habe ich mir mal ein Rumpsteak gemacht, da ich mal wieder ein richtiges Stück Fleisch brauchte. Das Fleisch war butterzart, obwohl es sich dabei um ein ganz normales Stück aus dem Supermarkt handelte. Es war zwar teurer als bei uns aus dem Supermarkt, aber dafür auch viel besser.

The weather was quite nice in Te Anau this morning meaning it was not raining and so I started towards Milford Sound. However the closer I got to Milford, the worse the weather got. Shortly before Milford it was pouring, but by then it was too late to switch to the afternoon tour.

So I went together with 40 other people onto the boat in a pouring rain – and did not regret it at all!! You could get an idea of the great landscape even in the rain. Sunshine might have been better, however then we would not have seen so many waterfalls as they only come out in the rain. 30 min after the rain stops the waterfalls are gone.

We also saw fur seals again. This time it were not brown seals on brown background!! By the way fur seals and sea lions are very closely related. So my first assessment in Kaikoura was not that much off.

I have paid 88 NZ$ (ca. 58 EUR without Transport) for a 2,5 hrs Nature Tour. The difference between that and the 1,5 hrs Scenic Tour is that we had a guide on board who explained a lot. I can just recommend this tour.

Luckily it did not work out with the accommodation directly at the Milford Sound. In a weather like this there would have been nothing to do.

Since I am back in Te Anau I am fighting with Vodafone. My plan expires today and I would like to change to a less expenisve plan as I am only for another 10 days in New Zealand. I already had 2 unsuccessful attempts last night and I am already at my second attempt today after the internet update did not work. I don’t know how long I have to wait and if it works at all. If you cannot reach me anymore in the nex days, it did not work out!!

I decided to stay another day in Te Anau. There are a couple of things I need to do urgently and relaxing a bit is on my plan as well.

By the way I had a rump steak yesterday as I needed a real piece of meat. The meat was very tender despite the fact that I bought it from the supermarket. It might have been more expensive as in Germany, but it was much better as well.

Heute hatte ich ja einen Ruhetag geplant und das Wetter hat es mir leicht gemacht, gar nicht erst in Versuchung zu geraten, zu viel zu machen.

Es regnet und die nächsten Tage wird es wohl nicht anders werden, wenn man der Wettervorhersage glauben darf. Aber ich darf mich beschweren, da ich bis jetzt echt geniales Wetter hatte. Außerdem sind heute Morgen haufenweise Wandergruppen für den Milford Track (3-4 Tage) aufgebrochen und die haben sogar die Vorhersage für Schnee in einigen Bereichen.

Daß ich so lange gutes Wetter hatte, war eh ungewöhnlich – jedenfalls laut den Einheimischen hier. Auch im Sommer gibt es kaum längere Zeiträume mit strahlendem Sonnenschein und über 25°C. Man vergißt leicht, wie weit man schon im Süden ist. Ich habe gestern eine Markierung für den 45. Breitengrad gesehen. Bitte denkt auch daran, daß es hier umgekehrt, wie in Europa ist. Der südliche Teil ist kälter, da er näher am Südpol liegt, während der nördliche Teil näher zum Äquator ist. Außerdem sind die Inseln wesentlich ungeschützter dem Wetter ausgesetzt, als die große Landmasse Europa.

Aber ich habe ja alles dabei. Nicht so wie einige andere, die nur für gutes Wetter gepackt haben und weder genug dicke Pullover noch Regenjacken dabei haben!!!

Ich bin schon oft gefragt worden, ob ich den wieder nach Deutschland komme. Die Antwort ist definitiv - ja!! So schön Neuseeland ist, aber auf die Dauer bin ich kein Typ für „nur“ Natur. Ich brauche eine richtige Stadt in der Nähe und auch mal eine, die nicht nur 200 Jahre alt ist!!

Außerdem freue ich mich schon riesig auf meine eigene Wohnung. Es sind jetzt noch 8 Übernachtungen hier in Neuseeland in JHB oder Backpackers, dann noch 2 in Sydney in einer JHB und 2 in einem Hotel in Seoul. Dann habe ich mein eigenes Bett wieder, mein eigenes Bad mit einer Badewanne und meine Küche, die nicht jeden Morgen aussieht wie ein Schlachtfeld.

Denn die Rücksichtslosigkeit vieler hört beim Türenschlagen nicht auf. Erst blockieren sie abends die Küche beim Kochen und dann lassen sie alles so stehen, ohne abzuwaschen, obwohl überall steht, daß man doch bitte abwaschen möchte. Morgens hat man dann schon teilweise Probleme, genug Geschirr für sein eigenes Frühstück zu finden.

Es war heute ganz angenehm mal sowohl das Bad, wie auch die Küche direkt nach dem Saubermachen zu nutzen!! Kurze Zeit später stand der Vorraum der Dusche, die ich genutzt hatte und bei der ich darauf geachtet hatte, daß ich nicht zu sehr spritze, total unter Wasser. Echt zuvorkommend für alle die später kommen.

Ansonsten habe ich den Tag in erster Linie für Datensicherungen und die Vorbereitung der Blogseiten der nächsten Tage genutzt. Auf dem Flug von FRA – AKL hatte ich alle Seiten für die Nordinsel vorbereite, was sehr angenehm war. Doch seitdem habe ich nicht das Gleiche für die Südinsel geschafft, was immer zu etwas mehr Arbeit führt, wenn ich an einem neuen Ort ankomme.

Morgen geht es über Invercargill in die Catlins. Auch dort ist mehr faulenzen als besichtigen angesagt. Daher wird es die nächste Zeit wahrscheinlich nicht mehr so viele Fotos geben!! Erst Ende der Woche geht es nach Dunedin. Dort will ich zu einer Albatross-Kolonie.

Today I had planned a day of rest and the weather helped that I would not do much. It rained all day and it will stay the same for the next couple of days if you can believe the weather forecast. But I should not complain. The weather was really gorgeous until now. Also a lot of hiking groups started on the Milford Track (3-4 days) this morning and their forecast included snow in the mountains.

It is quite unusual that I had such a good weather for so long – at least if you can believe the locals. Even in summer you hardly have long spells of sunshine and temperatures above 25°C here. It is easy to forget how far south we are already. I saw a marking for the 45th degree of latitude and you have to remember that it is the other way around here compared to Europe. The southern part is colder as it is closer to the South Pole while the northern part is closer to the Equator. Also the islands are more exposed to the weather compared to Europe’s big landmass.  

But I should not complain as I packed for every weather. Not like others who only packed for good weather and are now missing thick jumpers or even a rain jacket!!

I have been asked a couple of time if I want to go back to Germany. The answer is a definite – yes!!! As beautiful New Zealand is but after a while I need more then “just” nature. I need a real city close by and once in a while one that is a bit older than just 200 years!!

Also I am really looking forward to my own flat. There are 8 nights left in a YHA or backpackers here in New Zealand. Then another 2 in a YHA in Sydney and 2 in a hotel in Seoul. After that I will have my own bed, bath (incl. a bathtub) and my own kitchen back. The later will not look like a battlefield every morning.

The inconsiderateness of some does not stop with banging doors. First they block the kitchen when cooking in the evening and then they leave everything without doing their dishes. Despite the fact that there are a lot of signs asking you to do so. In the morning there are so many dirty dishes that you sometimes even have problems finding clean ones from breakfast.

It was real nice today to use the bathroom as well as the kitchen directly after they were cleaned!! The shower I used and were I was really careful not to flood it, was completely flooded shortly after. This is really inconsiderate for those taking a shower later!!  

 Otherwise I used the day to do data backups and to prepare the blog pages for the next couple of destinations. On the flight from FRA – AKL I had prepared all pages for the north island which really helped. But I never got around doing the same for the south island. This always meant extra work every time I arrived at a new destination.

Tomorrow I will drive to the Catlins via Invercargill. There I will rest some more and only little sightseeing in planned. So I probably will not have as many pictures anymore for the next couple of days!! End of the week I will go to Dunedin. There I will visit an albatross colony.
